depending on the physical location, climate and age of the site, different things will be present. To a great extent, there are multi levels of civilizations at specific sites. this holds true for caves and cities. A lot of currently extant cities are built atop older cities, and there may be a few cities buried under them. And archaelogist have continued to dig in caves and found evidence of earlier human habitation below the original top layer they were studying.

the artifacts would be culture specific to each location and, to a great extent, indicate the age of the site. also, whatever tools left behind would have been useful for the specific environment the ancient peoples survived in. But sometime, because of trade with diferent civilizations, items found are not necessarily intrinsic to the specific culture, but have been brought in by traders. This makes identifying the specific culture of that site more enigmatic. ENOUGH!

Similarities:
Lots of people have to do a lot of digging to find anything. (Generally when they do find something it is usually in half a gabillion pieces, so they have to apply for federal grants in order to spend time putting it back together again.)

In less it is a battlefield, usually archeaologists find remains of a structure or town.

Differences:
Their locations on the earth. There are many, many active digs all throughout the globe. Some of them are in really exotic places - like the Mayan ruins in the rainforest. Others are more urban - like Pompeii. Few are even in the ocean - like the Titanic wreck site.

Sometimes archaeologists find skeletal remains, sometimes they don't.

Hope this gets you started...

Like what? You mean like the fact that Schleimann discovered Troy there was no evidence that the cities that he found were indeed Troy but some other place?
