I'm going to london for a week at the end of October and I was thinking of buying a three quarter length black wool coat for the trip. I currently live in FL, and don't have much experience with cold weather fashion. Would I be out of place wearing this? Is it too early in the season? I've always wanted an opportunity to wear a real winter coat but don't want to look silly ^^ Temperature wise it will be in the 40's and 50's, which to me I know will seem freezing.

I just got back to Hawaii from England and Scotland. I arrived in mid-September and discovered I hadn't brought enough short-sleeved shirts. There were times it was cold enough for me to wear my fleece jacket, but I did have to break down and buy a T-shirt for the other days. It will be colder when you're there, but lighter clothing can be layered under sweaters and coats.

In general, I found that the British were wearing heavier clothes than I was when the weather was cold, but they weren't dragging a big backpack and two other bags onto trains, trams, buses, and boats, up the hill, or down the street to the hotels and stations! I found a nylon rainjacket to be the most convenient outerwear most of the time, but I think you'll get a chance to wear your 3/4 coat. Black is always right in any case.

It is getting cold very quickly here in London. Some folks are already out in 3/4 lenght coats. I myself am still wearing a cropped jacket every day, but by end of October I might also be in my wool 3/4.
It's also raining a lot, so bring a brollie (umbrella) as well.
And enjoy wearing you're full coat, maybe with some nice gloves and a matching scarf and hat.
And if you have a dark jacket, accessorize with color full scarves and gloves.
Also it's true what dumpling said, no-one in London notices what anyone is wearing, so you can wear a long coat in summer, no-one will look twice.
Enjoy you're trip.

A warm coat is an absolute necessity during London's winter. You will be thanking me when you get over here!
