It's so drivers in front can read the word forwards in their rear-view mirror.
But what sort of idiot would go:
"Hey, what's that big white truck behind me with sirens blasting and lights flashing all over th- oh... oh, wait a minute, it's an ambulance! Better pull over".

It's because sometimes if the patient is dead and they are really important they have to go back in time to save them.This reversal sometimes isn't corrected on the return journey,

when you see it in your review mirrior it will be the right way and you can read it right, so you know that its coming and you can get out of the way,,, not that you wont know anyway becuase they have sirens but i guess for deaf people or whatever it might be
