OK, you want to do this the hard way. Dont use a paper clip. They sell a tool that plugs directly into the ecm where you get the codes from. Usually the ecm connector is located near the steering column, probably next to your left knee. Install the jumper into the connector where it belongs. Turn the key to power on the unit. Count your flashes. Your check engine lite will flash. You should get 1-flash and then a pause, then 2 flashes and a pause. This will be a code 12 which is a normal diagnostic code on the early OBD computers. After the #12 code you will have another code if you had or have a problem in the system. Lets sasy you get 4 fast flashes a pause and then 2 quick flashes. What do you get? Right, code #42! Get it now??
For your own information it is best to clear all the codes 1st in the system before you run this test. To do this is 1 of 2 ways. You can remove the red 10amp fuse marked ECM in the fuse panel for about 20 seconds and reinstall or you can remove the battery cable for 20 seconds. This will erase any stored codes in your ECM. You need to do this because if you had a problem from an earlier date , maybe by someone who owned the car before you did, the old codes were or may nor have been erased. So do yourself a favor and erase everything 1st. Then drive your car normally until the check engine light comes back on. Then perform the diagnostic codes check and see what you get. Remember code 12 is normal, anything else you may want to write down because you can have more than 1 code in the system. Once you ID the code numbers, buy yourself a manual for your car that has the codes listed or just call Auto Zone and give them the codes that you retrieved. they will tell you what the code means and possibly recomend a repair for you.
Hope this helped and good luck....
