When my daughter was that age, I bought her some large blocks with the alphabet on them. And another set with numbers on them, and both last a life time, because now my grandchildren are playing and learning from those "same" blocks! And compared to a lot of other gifts out there, they are not too expensive. Good luck, and have a nice christmas.

most toys and toy stores will have things labelled according to age; just go browsing in a toy store and check the age requirements; you'll be sure to find something you want to get that way. there are some stores, like Thinker Toys, that specialize in "educational" toys; there is also a catalog and website for a company called "Mindware" that has some cool stuff. either way, almost everything for kids is labelled by age, so you won't be able to make a mistake. have fun!

Something that's educational, bright, and noisy to keep their attention. Also make sure it comes in a big cool Box, because that's what they always play with first.

The Muppet Show on DVD. My little girl loves it, visual stimulation, and a hella lot of great classic music.
