Period irregularities can be caused by many things....diet, too much exercise, stress, medications, etc so first look at anything different you may be doing. Secondly it is possible that you are developing PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) which causes you not to ovulate therefore not have regular periods. Do you have any other symptoms such as excessive hair, bad acne, overweight, or blood sugar problems? If yes to any one of these questions it wouldn't hurt to see a doctor. As a matter of fact it wouldn't hurt anyway since you have already been trying for over a year.

If your period is irregular, I'd suggest monitoring is less useful then average - you should have sex every other day, because who knows when you'll ovulate?
Did you know that most conceptions end in miscarriage within the first month? If you've always been regular, and now you're not, my guess is you've had some fast miscarriages - which is very normal.

You are now aware that to get pregnant you must have sex on a day that your eggs are being released.
Even if your period are irregular after the 3rd day from the day that menses started put a thermometer into your mouth and check your body temperature every morning before you start turning in bed. The best time is at about 4 a.m. Maintain a chart. You will find that on one day the body temperature drops from 1/2 degree to one degree. This is the day that your eggs are being released. If you want to get pregnant this is the day that you must have sex. Tell your husband to ejaculate on his inward thrust so that the sperms will shoot deep inside.
After having sex you must stay in bed for about 30 mins with your knees bent up with a pillow under your buttocks so that the sperms will not pour out - to enable them to travel up.
Get your husband to save his sperms in the testacles for at least 3 days before sex to enable them to mature well to do their job.

How is your health otherwise? Especially, are you at a normal weight with no significant gain or loss recently? A general checkup might be in order before you trot off to the infertility clinic -- there might be an underlying problem contributing to your irregularity.

I suggest looking into ways to monitor your fertility. The book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" is a good one on this topic. There are natural signs you can look for, like cervical fluid and position, to tell when ovulation is approaching. Your basal body temperature can tell you when ovulation has occured. Many people use this information both to prevent pregnancy and to get pregnant.
Good luck!
