Bonding is a cheaper form of brake shoe remanufacturing. The manufacturer glues the brake material to the brake shoe plate. This is not the best way to go, when the shoes get hot from high speed braking, i have seen the lining tear away, which is not a good thing. Riveted shoes have the linings riveted to the brake shoe plates offering a more secured lining. Yes the riveted type are a bit more expensive.
Hope this helps.........good luck

Brake friction material originally was installed using rivets. Once high heat adhesive and the new velcro style locking method became available, it has been widely adapted. There are still some brake pads and shoes using riveted friction, but bonded friction is a great improvement.
Not only do you get more friction area and thicker friction material, but you also get the benefit of reduced noise since the bonded friction does not "move" on the backing material.
Buy bonded friction.

I would think that it would be the way the pads are mounted to the pad holder. Bonded being glued or some other kind of adhesive or chemical bonding. Riveted is just that, the use rivets to mount the pad to the holder so those can be returned and new pads can be mounted on it. Hence some pads have core refunds.

Bonded means they glued the linings. Riveted mean the used a rivet to hold the lining on the backing plate. A rivet is a mechanical fastener similar to a bolt except when it goes on it cannotcome off unless drilled and chiseled off.
