You cannot prevent them, they are a form of herpes and the virus will be with you the rest of your life. Supposedly Abreva works in shortening the healing time, but i've never used it. Usually you just need to give it tiem to heal on its own.

The only way to prevent cold sores is to take a daily dose of the amino acid L-Lysine. 1,000 mg per day should do the trick. You can find it pretty cheap at places like drug stores and stores like wal-mart - anywhere vitamins are sold.

Also stay away from consuming foods that contain the amino acid L-Arginine like peanuts, chocolate, and raisins. They can make cold sore sufferer's break out more often.

Stress, lack of rest, too much sunlight, colds and flu, and scratching or getting hit in the area can all trigger cold sores. Good nutrition will also help stave them off.

I hope this helps! I used to suffer from 6 or more cold sores a year until I got proactive and smart about what I ate and how I treated them. I haven't had an outbreak in quite a while (well over a year) now. Good luck!
