most glass does not conduct heat very well. As a result, heating or chilling one part of a glass object will result in rapid expansion or contraction in one part, but the remainder of the item stays the same size, possibly resulting in cracking.

Cracking of glass is to due thermal /heat flux gradient during heating. The differential expansion causes the glass to crack.

when a glass is absorbing heat it thickens suddenly when its kept in water it cracks........

it's all about expansion. there's an equation that govens this which makes me glad i'm not an engineer
