Smells are always stronger at night. The air is heavier (colder), so molecules are closer together, making the scent stronger. Also, it seems that several flowers actually have a stronger fragrance at night (or are perceived to, anyway!), often to attract moth pollinators. Don't know which reason applies to your lily, but there it is!

Yahz got it! Some lillies require specific insects for pollination -- in this case the noctournal pollinators are preferred, so to attract them the flower's scent is increased. Bet it smells heavenly!
