That what Bertrand Russel asked people who said who have faith in God and Hell and Heaven. His view was that people do not really believe in all this talk of hell and heaven and they are interested in the immediate problems. But, that is a very simplistic way of looking at the thing. It is a fact that there is a life beyond death. Whether it will be good or bad will be on the basis of the present karma of ours. Although we wish that we go to heaven , after death, it is difficult for us to shake off the present existence. we have developed an attachment to this body of ours that it is painful even if we were the saints not to feel for leaving this mortal frame. Hence, the tears at the idea of death.

People are afraid.

For people that don't believe in anything, its the fear of 'WHAT IF' - what if there truly is a heaven and hell...where will their soul go after all those years of living life their way?

Also its like, if there is a heaven - there automatically has to be a hell and people don't want to face that. They are unsure about it all

For people who have faith in God, they are afraid because in truth they are unsure of their salvation. They don't have an assurance that they are saved inspite of their religiosity. This is becaus they forget that having faith in God is not about religion but rather about a personal relationship with God.

so, why are poeple scared to die? Because they don't have the 100% assurance of where they will spend the rest of eternity.

Whenever we meet death we should be ready for it, not afraid of it. Peolple fear death because they havent lived a complete life, they arent happy with the way the life has gone. We should all live good lifes and make sure we do good things that way when we meet death we know we have nothing else to live for here in this life. We need to leave a mark behind, teach morals to our kids and be a good person to all.

It's human nature to be afraid of things that we can't control and are unsure of. The fact that we will all die one day and there is nothing we can do to stop it is really frightening to a lot of people. Also it's a lot easier to say that you believe in heaven when you are talking about it as an abstract idea. Actually trusting it to be there when you die is a completely different thing.

They aren't 100% certain there is a heaven or that they are praying to the right god, so they fear death. That's a good thing, because only a crazy person could be 100% certain in something for which there is absolutely no evidence.

I wish to answer the last part of your question first i.e. why the people are afraid of death.

Nothing is so certain beside death but still people are afraid of it. Why ?

Bcoz God wanted us to be afraid of it.

The God has created the life and IF we are not afraid of its end we will be casual in taking our lives easily.

The fear of death is very essential to sustain life which is a gift of God. Why God would want to destroy his own work ? Therefore he embeded this characteristic in every creature. FEAR OF DEATH.

Now for the first part...

What is heaven ? Just a reward of your deeds which you have commited during your life.

Who doesnt want his/ her performance recognised by the boss or higher authority ?

After all God is the supreme Boss and everbody wishes to take reward from His hands.[?]

I think people want to go to heaven because they think it will be a wonderful place to go to. I think people are afraid of death because they will be leaving everything they have ever known and they are not sure what happens when they do die they are not sure they will get to go to heaven

Wanting to go to heaven has an origin in the psyche of human beings but the fear of death is biological in nature. No living being will automatically surrender to death without any fight. It is the very system of the living being that protects it. Human is no exception.

It is because of fair good imaginery ideas about the heavenly enjoyment that people want to go to heaven. But people think that death is a painful procedure so are afraid of it!

most of US live in heaven now...it is the unknown that we fear, hence Death being called "The Great Unknown". That is where fear of G-d starts, when that happens death becomes a part of life. Then I see that death is a tool of the universe to force US to become a part of It. Simply really, people fear what they can never understand. Understanding my own life allows I to prepare for my own death, living every moment concentrating on my last breath.
