it was about a society where attempts were made to make everyone equal. if you were fast, weights would be attached to you to slow you down. if you were beautiful you had to wear a mask, etc.. the story ends with some guy tearing off his weights and removing his mask and other impediments only to be shot and killed. i don't know if it was a short story or book.

Yes this is definitely Harrison Burgeron by Kurt Vonnegut. I may be wrong but I think it was actually a short story in Playboy magazine at one time!

Few people realize he started writing quite a bit of sci-fi!!

What a great author by the way. Check out “Time Quake” or “Slaughter House Five” or for short stoories "Welcome to The Monkey House."
