I'm moving 800 miles across the country. I have four fish, an anemone, and a shrimp. How do I transport them safely during a 13 hour drive?

Use a cooler to move them. It won't make them cold (before some one says it). It will insulate to mantain their water temperature an support the bag they're in so it doesn't flatten on them. You can get styrofoam coolers cheap and in many sizes, ask a vet, they get vaccines in them and usually have many saved up that they don't really use. You can ask a fish store for good bags to use. The cooler also keeps things from shifting onto the bags or punturing them. Good kuck

I moved 900 miles a few months ago, with 7 tanks worth of fish. Mine were fresh water though. What I did was get some of those 20 gallon plastic bins from the store. Rinse it out well. Fill it up with the tank water. Put the fish in one, any decorations, sand, gravel, filter media, etc. in another(be sure to keep the filter media and stuff wet to preserve your beneficial bacteria). Buy a battery operated air pump & tubing to hook up for the fish(I'll give you a link for a cheap one online). Don't know if they make one, never seen it, need to figure out something to heat the water-it's cooling off at night depending where you're going. I'll give you some more links to forums you can ask around about it. As far as the anemone, I don't know if they need special lighting? Ask on one of the forums. I would also premix in a container some salt/water and halfway maybe do a quick water change, again ask on the forums to be sure.
Air pump-do a search for battery operated pumps

I wish you a lot of luck. Make sure you keep all your substrate, live rock, and filter media wet at all times. I would also suggest you do a water change the day before and when you are ready to pack up your tank, remove the water and save it to refill the tank when you reach your destination. The day after your tank is set up, you will need to do another water change as many of the benthic organisms will die on the way. Don't feed your tank for two days prior to the move. Fish waste in bags turns the water toxic quickly. Get large size fish bags from your local pet store and put one inside the other in case of leaks. Bag your guys individually with 1/3 water and 2/3 air in the bags and put them in a Styrofoam container to protect them form rapid temperature changes.

Place them in a large plastic, strong bag. (The kind you get your fish in) Due to the fact that your not going to have a heater or any kind of circulation, i would suggest that you put an oxygen tablet in the bag with your fish. Place the bag in a secure place so it wont get move or fall, and place a blanker or some kind of covering over it to hold in the heat.....Good luck
