It actually does not do much for a batter. When Sammy Sosa got suspended in 2003 for his corked bat, there were all kinds of things on ESPN that talked about it and proved that it only improves the swing by about 1%.

A corked bat is a modified baseball bat that has been drilled down through the thick end of the bat. Crushed cork, super ball, sawdust, or other similar material is compacted into the hole and the end is typically patched up with glue and sawdust. This less dense substances to make the bat lighter without losing much power. A lighter bat means a quicker swing and may improve the hitter's timing. Since the bat is lighter, the ball does not always travel as far as with a regular bat, but usually only by a few feet at most.

In MLB, modifying a bat with foreign substances and using it in play is illegal.

It lightens the fat end of the bat, meaning the hitter has more speed and control during the swing. I'm supposing that it also redistributes the weight so that a greater percentage of it is in the far end of the bat as well.

Lightens the bat so you have a larger hitting surface with less weight than a regular chunk of lumber.

some believe that it takes an ounce or two off the weight of the bat, giving the hitter greater bat speed.

here's a pretty cool article with both pro's and con's.........
