Cervical cancer is not an easy problem, irradiation and chemotherapy may or may not work well. Hysterectomies are sometimes useful, but that depends on the foci of the problem. Several new techniques are in hand but awaiting USDA approval. Radical dissection is often used to attempt to elimate the cancerous tissue, and this is why a Pap's Smear is important as a woman approaches middle age, so that the problem can be dealt with.

Not yet, but they are getting closer.
Cervix cancer is almost always caused by certain strains (14 and 16, I think) of the human papiloma virus (HPV) and I believe that they are in the trial phase of a vaccine against HPV, which, if given to most women would drastically reduce the cases of cervical cancer. It is very a very exciting prospect since many women carry HPV and do not know it until it is too late. That is why regular PAP tests are essential to the health of women, until the day that cervical cancer can be eradicated.
The vaccine would be especially beneficial in developing countries, since there is usually a higher rate of cervical cancer in these countries. It causes premature death and suffering for many women and leaves many children without their mothers. Anything to prevent these deaths would be welcome.

cervical cancer has been treated and cured in many women, it seems the key is how early it is caught.

Like any cancer, that depends on when it's caught. Treatment, of course, is if they can cut it all out of your body. There is no cure for any cancer.

Since Pap smears became common, we do not see it too often. X-ray, surgical removal of female organs and chemotherapy may be used. For early stages, five year cure is good percent.
