What some of the other folks said about the + or - format is most likely correct. Assuming you do not have the instructions or packaging for the DVD burner and you are running windows: open the "my computer" icon, then right click on the icon that represents your DVD drive, and open the properties option. Look on the general tab in this window next to "Type:". If it does not tell you in the general tab, click on the hardware tab and it will tell you what type of drive you have. You can also double click on the drive from this screen and see more properties of the drive. Good luck.

Check the following:
1. is the drive really a burner of just CD-ROM
2. are you using writable DVDs or are they really CDs
3. is the driver for the dvd burner installed and active
4. might it be cheaper and less stressful to buy the dvd instead of copying one

Not all drives recognize all brands of writable DVD's. Check with the manufaturer of your drive to see which brand is compatible. Also try updating the program you use to burn DVD's. Like Nero or whatever.
