Is "My birthday is on the 1st of May." correct? How about " My birthday is May 1." ? I am a non-native English speaker and am studying English. If you find any mistakes with my writing, please let me know. Thank you.

Proper "English" English would be "My birthday is on the 1st of May" or even "My birthday is on May the 1st".

American (horribly bastardised and corrupted) English would be "My birthday is May 1st", which is actually nonsensical - it implies that your birthday might happen at some other time eg - then June second, or september 3rd (you see where I'm going with this? It made sense in my head!)

The problem with the American-English version is the missing "the" between day and month (or month and day - as long as it's there, it's fine) It sheer laziness, and sounds awful, but then again, it's a dialect, so I shouldn't be so harsh.

Also please be aware that the word "colour" has a "u" in it...

You can say "My Birthday is on the 1st of May", "my birthday is the 1st of May" or, my birthday is May 1st." This last way sounds very American, but, both are acceptable.
This criticism is directed to Chant'e: You said : "you're doing good"! That's not correct English!
What you should have said is "you're doing well".
Also "instance", not "instants". It's a good idea to check your spelling when helping learners of English. .

I don't think that either way is actually incorrect, but I would always say that "my Birthday is on the 1st May" (actually, it's the 1st January!). The second way you have suggested sounds rather more how the American's would phrase it.

Your English is really very good, much better than a lot of native English people's!

Both ways are perfectly acceptable except it is "May 1st" and not "May 1". You should know that the English you used in your question is a lot better than most English people can do! Well done!!

The first way "My birthday is on the 1st of May" is the English way of saying it.
The second one "My birthday is May 1st" is the American way.
Hope this helps xxx

Your English is great. I would say "My birthday is on the 1st of May" But if you are writing it then you would put, My bithday is 1st may, depending on the formality you might need to put the year afterwards.

You say your birthday is the 1st of May OR you can say it is May 1st. Either way is correct.

Depends if you're using UK English or USA English.
An English person would say 'on May the first/the first of May', an American 'on May first'.

Dates are written differently in Europe and in the U.S. In Europe, May 1, 2006 would be shown as 1/5/06, but here (U.S.), it is 5/1/06. For the U.S., I would say, "My birthday is May 1" and disagree with the poster who says that it should be written May 1st.

Written: May 1
Spoken: May first
