The safest thing to try first is putting an ice cube on the stain. This usually hardens the stain and lessens it "hold" on the carpet fibers. Then just scrape it off (gently) using a screwdrive or putty knife.Tar stains have a variety of chemical compositions. Some can be removed with turpentine and a sponge. Camping lantern fuel is mostly benzene --- which will dissolve tar stains. Use a plastic glove to protect you hand.

you can buy a tar remover from any janitorial supply store. this easily removes tar but I would rent a steam machine to clean the carpet and work on the stain or just call a cleaning company to come in and do this for you.

Call a carpet cleaner directly and see if they can give you any tips. We once had permanent marker on the brand new carpet and were told to go to wal-mart and get "oops"....it worked like magic! Definitly ask a professional. Also, don't use any type of soap, ect....they say it will "set" any stains.

Sponge with a small amount of dry cleaning solvent Blot Mix one teaspoon of a mild pH balanced detergent (a mild non alkaline non bleaching detergent) with a cup of lukewarm water Blot Sponge with clean water Blot Note: Always test an inconspicuous area for colorfastness, etc. before treating the exposed area. Also note that certain stains are permanent.

Park your car so that one of the wheels is directly on the stain and no one will see it.
