Computer setup is usually the easy part. And because stores like Best Buy and Circuit City want you're money SOO BADLY they'll give you the anti-virus and spyware software for a "nominal" fee. Once you pull you're brand new PC out of the box and prepare to deal with the joy of starting it up for the first time, it goes smoothly, except for people that haven't used computers much in their lives. Besides, my Dad wouldn't pay someone to setup his PC for him when he has his own personal "Geek Squad" living so close. So... Why pay for someone to fix you're PC when you have free 24 hr tech support not 20 mins away?
And if I did have to have someone setup a PC for me, I'd pay them back w/ a case of beer (so long as they where of age.)

i am completely self taught in setting up computer, my first one was a gateway about 6 yrs. ago..i read and followed all of the instructions, and plug in diagrams,, I installed all of the programs that needed to be, but i went very slow and followed all of the directions. I have since had 2 different dells, (gateway was junk, and i gave one dell to a granddaughter) and i am certainly no computer installation whiz but i have learned a lot, and yes i regularly defrag the hard drive, and install updates...when i got the new dell i had to remove McAfee anti-virus and transfer my Norton over to the new one..That was interesting, I had to talk to dell about that one..I have logged a lot of hours talking to tech services when i get in a bind, but hey, if i can do it, anybody can.. I think the key is patience, reading instructions and following them to the letter..good luck to you...

I pay nothing, because I am a Computer technician.
I figure if you are going to sit in front of a computer on a daily basis, it would be wise to "learn" about them?.!
So many people use computers and the majority of them have no idea what they are doing.
Case in point. Look at how many people get viruses and spyware. None of which I have ever had. I've cleaned plenty of PC's, but I myself never have a problem...why? Smart browsing and smart emailing.

I work in IT so no,
and most vendors will offer some sort of set up service.
but most importantly 90% of new pc's comes set up with items you mentioned above already.
the exception being custom built pc's.
15 years ago this would have been a good business today no chance in hell.

no. i find building a computer easy, and a network, so setting up a computer out of the box is like taking cornflakes out of a box. although that is hard if you do it like 5 minutes after waking up.
