Swimbladder is a disease which symptoms cause fish to become unable to swim correctly, your fish may exibit swimming toward the bottom of your tank or bowl, then floating back up, swimming in circles or laying or floating on his side....
There are three main things according to the posts and articles I've read that can lead to swimbladder disease.
Constipation due to overfeeding
Bad water quality
Bacteria
I recommend the following regimine, recommened to me over two years ago.
First, as soon as you notice signs of swimbladder do a 50%water change, taking care not to stress the fish by having the water temp as close to his tank as possible.
After your water change you should not feed your fish any food for two days. On the third day feed your fish a fresh pea. Frozen peas thawed, popped out of the skin, and cut into bite size pieces. And then do another water change so that any uneaten peas do not contaminate your water.
If you don't use aquarium salt this is a good addition to most tanks. The recommended dose is one teaspoon per gallon, or one tablespoon per five gallons. If you have never added salt and you are unsure; you may want to first acclimate him at only 1/2 tsp per gallon.

What kind of fish is it? It is possible that the conditions of your aquarium are not up for this kind of fish. You can surely find what kind it is on the web and what it requires. I use this site personnally, but it is not complete, however they give good advise and it's a good start point.
http://www.aquariusweb.qc.ca/docs_en/home.php
It's a store in Montreal, Quebec that specialize in fishes. When you have found what your fish requires for an aquarium, make tests.
Normally fishes have problem when your ammonia and nitrite levels are up. You can buy tests to do yourself at home or generally any pet store can do these tests for you (sometimes for a fee) if you bring about 1/2 a liter of your aquarium water there. Some fishes, like mentionned above require salt, but it's not EVERY kind of fish! And it's not table salt either, since it have iodine in it, so unless you are really aware that your fish needs a bit of salt in is water (special salt provided at your pet store) don't use this method, it will just kill the fish faster.
Finally, maybe your fish is already to weak to make a good recovery. Swimming sideways or upside-down is one of those signs... I never manage to bring back a fish from that myself. Good luck!

Water quality is the most important aspect in keeping fish healthy. You need to get a handle on that.

You did not say what kind of fish it is, and without knowing that it is hard to advise on treatment. Salt can be very beneficial to some fish, but deadly to others. Parasite treatments like Quick Cure are also toxic for some species.

If your fish is eating, you can try feeding medicated food. If not eating you can try antibiotics in the water, but this is much less effective. Without knowing more about the problem, I can't say which type of antibiotic would be best to use, or even if antibiotics are the best route.

If you have ammonia in your water then you are supposed to do a water change to take it out. Putting the fish in a bowl where the water will only get dirtier faster and has no filter will only make the fish worse and kill it faster.

confident, if one fish is ill they're going to all get ill. the only ailment i've got ever considered take over a tank (and it got here approximately as quickly as I presented a clean fish) develop into little white spots began to look on him a pair days later. Then the different fish have been given it and died too.

Try adding some aquarium salt... That usually helps... When you buy fish, always choose active, lively fish.
