I know this may sound a stupid question but have you noticed that this is the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and TransgenderED category.

What to Yahoo think happened to us - "Perhaps the Gender fairy sneaked into my bedroom when I was a baby and "Poof - Your Transgendered." I am Transgender - actually I prefer Trans, but it is the way I am, the way I was born - I am not and have never been transgendered.

Do you think Yahoo should change the name of this category to reflect the true situation or continue to insult all trans people, and by implication all LGBT people, in this way?

I am surprised at how little people understand about trans issues. I am transgender - that is how I was born - my gender identity is opposite to that suggested by my physical body. I can choose to have surgery to correct my body or I can leave it. That is a choice - Not all trans people have surgery but they are still trans/transgender. Lots of labels have been invented by people who are not trans and most of us would like to get to one label if there has to be one and in the UK, Trans is the preference.

My point is that calling me transgendered suggests something that has been done to me, a choice made and reflecting on many comments about people being born lesbian or gay or bisexual - the same is true of trans people.

Ah Richelle I like your question :) and allthough I (as a androgyne) felt/feel not offended and can see the humor in it, I wouldn't mind seeing it change either.

By the way, to some people here, you don't need to get a transition to be transgender! Being transgender is being between the typical genderdefinitions. If you had a transition you are transsexual.
So, people, if you can also call being transitioned transgenderED, right, I get your points. But what the hell does it matter, I ask myself now?
Just an other lable. Language confusion.

I do understand what you are saying
i don't think we should not change the category
as a transgender i feel the need to have us trans people
with the gay lesbians
we share many of the same problems like coming out, telling parents and discrimination
yes a gay or lesbian may not need to know electrolysis, hormones, operations shoes etc but we can still ask it here

i am gay in a way but straight in a way so learning things helps me even though it dose seem yahoo has put us in the other basically anything that is not heterosexual

so what is a ed anyway it is clear who ever wrote the site never knew what it meant

Not wishing to create waves here or rock the boat.... I'm a life long gender issues person too.... but I ask.... DOES IT MATTER what people call us ? I can't help feeling (and here comes the boat rocking part) that you're being a little pedantic about the use of a word. When you look at some other names we could be given as a lable... transgendered is pretty much as inoffensive as anyone could realisticaly hope for.

I think in thier use of the word Transgendered, Yahoo are encapsulating all forms of transgender... from guy's in thier wifes knickers (bless 'em) right through to the most militant post Op transexual rights activists. I say we should thank them for giving us any voice at all, and make the very most of it.

I think that the word implies that the transgender has already taken place and is not ment to be offensive to you all. I agree there is a great deal of ignorance surrounding the political correctness of what to call you all, but damn cut them some slack. Most LGB don't even include transgender people, they tried, they got it incorrect, so now you call them on it. On behalf of Yahoo I do apologize for the offensiveness of it, but I do not think it was intended that way. The (ed) denoted on the end of the word is only ment to imply that the gender transformation has already taken place and is no longer in process, so to answer your question we have been lesbianed and homosexualed, or gayed. Which ever way you wanna call, man I thought I was sensitive......

I have to agree with Tabbyfur on this one, most who identify really do understand the difference.

Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual are all adjectives, while Transgendered is a past tense verb.

If you continually change between a male and female identity you might have an argument. But since most trans, trannies, trans-genders have made up their mind and do not switch back and forth, it is proper to use the past tense.

Transgender is a choice hunny, you don't have to go out with a wig on, or a set of false nails. I do think the name should be changed though, I've never heard of transgendered before. By the way, the spell check doesn't recognise transgender, it wants you to be a transponder, you like transponders dont you?

Hmmm considering gays and lesbians do not require an operation to become who they are....
The terms would properly be Pre Op Transgender indicating no operation has been performed yet and Post op transgender (or simply transgendered) indicating the operation had indeed taken place.

That argument reminds me of those certain militant types who insist on spelling women, womyn, to avoid the implication that they are associated in any way with men.

While there is a real difference, by definition a pre op transgender person, by virtue of having a penis (or vagina) and being attracted to someone else with a penis(or vagina) are still concidered, for all intents and purposes, a homosexual until the operation actually takes place. At that point after the operation they are a transgenderED person.

As a transgender person myself, but no hormones, no srs, as yet I feel you have a valid point. But I'd sooner just be she than trans.
Oh well once a t always a t I guess.
Wasn't that a song once T for two. cha cha cha
That dates me 50 years in the closet you say, I'm more like 60 yrs but I'd love to hear your story. You tell me yr story and I'll tell you mine.

Transgendered means to have transferred your gender. Which you have. Many websites use the term Transgendered. You were not born with a body of a female but you were born with the thoughts and feelings of a female. To achieve your wish you transgendered. Maybe you should email Yahoo to ask them to change it.

Chill out, I am sure you face many aspects in life that are not fair and probably more than most considering you are saying you are "trans". Arent you used to ppl being close minded, and sometimes ignorant due to there lack of understanding of the subject. If it really bothers you, email them and make your point and see if they do something about it. If not then you can make the choice on whether to use their websites or not etc.
