why? because he was carrying the nation's flag?

you know, his subordinates should have obeyed the command of Col. Winter 's order and shot Irwin. but they didn't. it came at all of a sudden,unreasonably, i think.

Because they didn't see Irwin as a threat compared to how Winters perceived him. Irwin had the respect of the guards because they knew him to have been a good soldier and leader. Irwin also was able to get troubled inmates to behave like soldiers. Winters also thought he was going to raise the flag upside down which would have meant trouble to the approaching inspection committee (end of his career. that was the real reason he wanted Irwin shot and the guards refused).
