I don't think people are jumping on it because it's gay OR because the page might have been underage. It's because he's Republican, and it makes Republicans look bad.
I asked a friend of mine what he thought of Republican politics, and he instantly brought up Foley. Nothing about actual issues like education, social security, etc. Never mind that the Reps are just as upset as the Dems over this.
Foley definitely did the right thing by admitting it and resigning; I was impressed. Much better than pretending to be a victim and committing felony perjury over it, jeez. Friend said Foley's much worse than Lewinsky, because she was a consenting adult. (Paula Jones and Jennifer Flowers, anyone?)
Tangent: I find pedophilia interesting from a psychiatry study standpoint; their brains are different, like gays, it's considered a mental illness like homosexuality once was, and there are population statistics about them. Did you know that there are two kinds -- pedophiles who prefer young kids or pedophiles who prefer teens? We generally think of pedophiles as the people who prefer young kids, and of course find that rather scary. The people who prefer teens are pretty much ignored, because there are so many of them, it's considered culturally acceptable. (Every single erotic site you go to, there'll be a "teen" link, where they find legal 18-year-olds who look younger than that.) Unless, of course, they're in the public eye.

Mel, it's only a scandal to the extent the Congressman was a Republican. Otherwise, his behavior would have been perfectly acceptable, even embraced, by the Democratic Party.
I'd like to know what their reaction is now that we know the "kid" was really 18. Maybe they should have waited for the facts to come out.
