children should be taught to pick up after themselves when theyre old enough to make messes by themselves. Usually about 12-24 months.

Actually doing chores and cleaning probably more like 4-5.

But picking up your own messes with supervision, you're supposed to teach your kids that when theyre toddlers.

You should begin picking up after yourself as young as 4 or 5, and the amount that you do should grow with your age.

Ex: At 4 or 5 you should be picking up your toys/putting them away.

At 7 or 8 you should start to help around the house with simple chores.

After that, you are fully capable of doing just about any/all of the household chores.

My two year old helps pick up toys...he's done it for months now, we make a game of it. My six year old has helped since he was about the same age...the sooner you start the better they do it later. But you need to supervise them until they are about 4 or 5 because little kids become distracted easily.
I taught preshool for a long time and my 4 and 5 year olds always cleaned up after themselves...no excuses!

My three year old picks up after her self. She clears her dishes away from the table, picks up her toys, keeps her room tidy, puts her dirty clothes in the laundry basket, and makes her bed. Sometimes she needs reminding or help but she is learning and usually does pretty well on her own.

you should begin teaching your child to pick up after themself as soon as they are able to walk and play with toys. if you make the practice familiar to them at a yound age like 2 or 3, then as they grow older it will be a common practice that will definitely carry over into their lives when they are at school, a friends home, in the dorm room at college....

Honestly, if your a pre-teen, or a teen, it should have been about10 years ago. If you can take it out then you can puit it back. I have 3 girls.Ages 14, 12, and 4, and every one of them does her part in keeping our house tidy, and her own room clean ( or at least clean enough for the vacuum). If they didn't help out then i wouldn't be able to drive them to the groups they belong to or even get dinner on the table, and clean clothes in their rooms.I hope i answered your question.

Toddlers should pick up toys and by the time kids are 4, there is no reason they cant clean up anything they took out.

When you start playing with toys. My kids started (with my help) cleaning their rooms at around the age of two! My four year olds do it without help and actually do a better job than expected...they also (try) and make their own beds.
