It's our ego which is satisfied by impression. An impression is a make up of soul. We want to look beautiful that's why we use makeup. In the same way, we want to prove our self better in other people's eyes that's why we bother about impression. The day you will be get rid of ego that day you will stop bothering about impression

We care so much about impression, because it is usually lasting. It is hard to shake off a reputation that evolves from who you are or something you did. Why do we worry about it, because sometimes the impression others get is wrong and we want to fix it or manipulate so that it is more congruent with who we really are. But does it matter in the end, possibly not.

I think it's also an evolutionary thing.

The people in earlier days didn't meet a lot of people during their lifetime and were in a community of the same people during their whole life. So back then it mattered what each thought of us.

So worrying about the others thoughts of us is an inherent thing.
It's sure still important for our social progress etc., but it's not necessary to worry about eachs opinion of us. Those thoughts cause insecurities and limit us.

So many times it matters, unfortunately. We can't good jobs or very many types of things it takes to live in this world and be productive if no one who everyone has a good impression of has good impressions of us.

because everyone wants to be accepted on some level - if you can truly go thru this world totally being yourself at all times, regardless of what others think - good for you - it's a battle - here's something by ee cummings on this subject that i always liked:

"To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else-- means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting." -- e.e. cummings
