My mom says that having any soda during pregnancy is dangerous. Others have told me that having the equivilent to a couple cans of coke per day does no harm......whos right? I have a low-risk/normal pregnancy and I am in my second trimester (18 wks).

I am pregnant and asked my dietitian mother for the official answer. There have been studies, like others have said, that an extreme amount of caffeine is harmful. The article we looked at summarized the studies. The limit is 300 mg of caffeine. A 6 oz. cup of coffee has 85 mg., a 12 oz. pop has 150 mg. So one cup of coffee and a pop in 1 day is still ok. However, caffeinated, carbonated, and/or sugary drinks dehydrate you so it is not good to keep those on hand. It is better to drink water or juice.

Your mom is probably just wanting you to be cautious, and it is better to err on the safe side when you are pregnant.

Most of what I've read says that you shouldn't drink to much caffiene during pregnancy. But ONE cup of coffee or a 12oz soda is probaby OK. I would stay away from diet drinks that have aspertame and other sugar substitutes. That's not good for anybody! If your pregnancy is normal, I wouldn't worry too much about drinking some caffiene. Just limit yourself to one soda per day. I also try to drink enough water every day, so that any soda I do consume gets flushed out of my system well.

Keep in mind that in the "old days" women ate all sorts of bad stuff, drank alcohol, smoked - and probably rode on roller coasters. I'm sure a soda won't be the worst thing you could do.

Good luck!

Ok, I may be the only man to respond to this unless there is an OB/GYN answering questions here somewhere. It is very dangerous, not for your health as much as for our health and safety. At the risk of betraying the "Fraternal Order of Men" the first rule concerning a man's personal safety around pregnant women is: "1) Never stand between a pregnant woman and a bathroom door, either intentionally or due to inattentiveness, even if there is no place else to stand because SHE WILL HURT YOU! If she is drinking any caffinated beverage, tell her it is bad for the baby and by all means get it away from her but use great caution because if you are not diplomatic SHE WILL HURT YOU."
Rules 2 - 10 have to do with copying all keys, procedures for canceling lost credit cards, how to get replacement Drivers license, back rubs, foot rubs, carrying snacks with you at all times and not standing in front of the refrigerator and the futility of any legal suit if the rules are not followed to the letter.

Listen to your mom. Please.

Some studies have found that pregnant women who consumed large quantities of caffeine (five or more cups of coffee a day) were twice as likely to miscarry as those who consumed less, while fewer or no effects were seen at lower levels of caffeine consumption.4, 5 A detailed analysis of caffeine's reported effects on pregnancy outcome can be found at motherisk.org*

I would recommend limiting any drug intake. A couple of cans of soda is a lot of caffeine and sugar even if you're not pregnant.

If you had to listen to everyone that had advise for you, you would be a nervous wreck!! I drank soda as well as coffee in both my pregnancies in moderation and my children are extremely healthy!!! What I did do though is I stopped drinking coffee and anything with caffeine in it in my last trimester and didn't drink it after either as I was breast feeding.

I'm usually a water drinker on the norm even before pregnancy but since i've been sick the only thing i can seem to keep down is soft drinks. Any fluids are better than none right?! I think as long as you don't over do it you'll be fine.

Having a couple of cans of soda a day wont hurt your baby, just make sure you balance your caffiene intake out..so dont have a can of soda with a block of chocolate and then a cup of coffee ! Its all about moderation, you CAN have your soda and your healthy baby too !

Both.
Caffeine should be avoided, but research shows that drinking some caffeine is OK. My suggestion is try to stick to one a day. Also just remember that Ginger Ale has no caffeine at all.

a little bit is okay, maybe 1 or 2 a day . I have 4 healthy kids. just dont forget that if you drink coffee ,tea, or hot chocolate, you should only have 1 or 2 glasses a day.
