I've heard that goldfish can't see properly, but I disagree. When I walked into the room where the tank is in, it would go crazy, swimming back and forth. I'd put my finger against the glass and it would calm down. I don't think they can actually see you, but they can see a type of shadow or something that it recognizes as you. Since it would race around at the front of the tank, and "greet" me when I got home, this goldfish ended up being an awesome pet - I had it for two years before it passed away and I never thought I'd miss a goldfish, but I do!! This crazy fish was hilarious. Enjoy your goldfish - from the experience of raising my goldfish, it appears that yours is saying hi to you!

My goldfish do this too - when I walk into the room they swim back in forth in front of the tank looking at me. I reckon it's because they're pleased to see me - they're not as dumb as some people think, and I believe they enjoy the company as it must get a bit boring in there. And who knows, they might get fed too! :)

My current fish do this to get my attention when I'm out the kitchen near their tank they are asking for food, saying hello and they like movement. Goldfish are not as stupid as people think. When I had the tank in the living room they where always near the end of the tank nearest the TV.

So enjoy your pet he's just saying hi look at me or please feed me or just being noisy.

There's nothing to see at the back of the tank, it's probably just a wall.

He's just swimming about having a look what's going on.

If he swims accross the tank as you walk passed he's following you and hoping for food.

For exercise.
Give him some places to swim through and under in the tank. Like little bridges or houses or rocks.
Add some plants.
He's bored.

Your poor fish is bored - get it a bigger tank and a couple of plants - alternatively stick a suduko puzzle to the glass to give it something to do.

His options are limited and he has no where else to go.
Also fish must swim to force water through their gills so they can get air.
