It is not possible to afford decent housing anywhere in the Uk and this is down to excessive building regulations - energy conservation and green laws that make it financially impractical to develop buildings into new homes. Its a good idea in theory but the cost on property developers with regards to soundproofing and thermal insulation is mad. There will be more and more homeless in the future. Government buildings are in a mess yet private property developers are forced to get state of the art materials when renovating property - yet in other European Countries they build terrible houses - like in Poland and the incumbent Romania and Bulgaria even in Spain and France - there needs to be a balance in the Building Regulations - a level playing field for the UK is too much to ask for as per usual. Governments come up with high minded ideas all the time and they implement policies without regard to practical issues facing people of the UK - if people are sleeping rough and on the streets what use is it to have so much building regulations that put off investment into property development. Plus Eastern Europeans coming to the UK and everyone else and their uncle and aunts so much immigration and so much regulation on building development do not go side by side - the Government are a disgrace in all walks of life especially housing issues.

YOu should really be looking for areas that the government are keen on regenerating. This way you may avoid stamp duty costs, and snap up a bargain.
Also, get yourself along to a couple of property auctions to see the prices that things go for

it all depends on were in the UK u want to live?? example- my house is a 3bed corner terraced with a rear drive not flashy but its worth £110.000, now in London the same house would go for around £250.000, so like i said it depends on were u want to live. (i live in Manchester by the way)
