Good Morning ,
I don`t know the year and make but if its an older car the cable connection is prabably broken and a service will have to repair it for you. If it`s a newer car and have a brain , an electronic computer controlled system it could be something with the chip. A diagnostic test would probably reveal if the brain had a problem. I would call the local dealership and ask someone in repair about the vehicle and to explain if it is computerized or not and inquire into where to go for repairs. If there are brain issues you could be experiencing other problems and not know it such as brake lights signals and so on. I hope you find the problem quickly.
Jim

Older car-broken cable, stripped gear or the cables come off. Newer car(electronic) stuffed sensor or the connections come off or broken. If none of those, stuffed speedo.

Do you have a Ford car? Because i hav one and had the same problem.
Just ask the service center to repair it for you when you give it for servicing-they did that for me and it's now fine.
