Do you think that the Do-It-Yourself boom is taking work away from tradespersons? Like carpenters, electritians, plumbers.. etc? It seems that everyone is doing everything themselves, and that when you buy something like.. kitchen cabinets, they come with instructions for you to do it.. and not hire a professional like you used to do.

Just wondering.

There are plenty of people who aren't as intelligent or talented as you who still need out help . Don't feel guilty the good ones stay busy.

Great question, and as a long time tradesman I offer this.

Not everyone who complains about trades prices, ever gets to a DIY stage. It may be that they can't or just won't?

Not everyone truly wants to go to that level of effort, and often end up calling a contractor after the fact anyway.

Most of my customers already HAVE a LIFE and not the time to engage in "Trades" work, even for themselves. Certainly I wouldn't expect someone who purchased something from a BIG box store to call on me to put it together, and I likely wouldn't take the job, but there is enough work available for any tradesman wanting to work.

no prob. the opposite is happening...with the growth of the side industry of having a professional fix what ever the idiot at home did..(usually get part way into it and find themselves over their head) also - most municipalities require licensing and inspections of such systems as electricity, water/sewer/ heating etc...
