The way I have been doing it for years to get perfect results every time is;
1. Place an egg in a cold pan of water.
2. Bring to the boil.
3. From the point when you see bubbles starting to appear from the water starting to boil, start timing exactly 3 minutes, then remove the egg promptly.

Some people state to just place an egg into a boiling pan of water for 3½ minutes, but this will most likely crack the egg.

An old wive's tale to prevent an egg from cracking is to place a burnt matchstick in the water before you put the egg in. I don't know why, but it has always worked for my mum.

But I still prefer the 3 minute method!

put some water in a pan (just enough to cover the egg) and a little white vinegar. Break the egg into a small bowl very carefully as not to damage the shape of it. Then right before the water comes to a boil, slowly add the egg in, dont drop it in, let it slide in. Take it out after a couple minutes when the white part is hard. enjoy!

I do 4 min and some seconds, because I really don't like runny white.
Also, the timing depends on your altitude: as water boils at lower temp the higher you go, at 3000 ft an egg will take almost a min longer to get perfect.

if you put just enough water in the pot to cover the egg (cold water) and put a lid on the pot, turn it on boil or high and time for 5.5 minutes from when you turn it on, not from when its boiling. If you add the egg after the water is boiling then its about 3-4 minutes

For a medium class egg, get a pan and cover egg with water (not really cold just room temp).
Ignite hob on high heat, and as soon as water starts to boil time exactly 3 minutes. remove and serve.
larger eggs 3.30 - 4 min
small egg 2.30 mins.

Water should not be cold as one answer suggests. You need to bring the water to the boil and time for 3 minutes.
