Best explained by what I want to do. I am going travelling and want to create a file that has all my usernames and passwords for various websites. Since I want it to include financial institutions it needs to be secure. I do not like the XP encyp function as I may want to store the file on my flash drive and will go from PC to PC. I do not like the MS word password protect as it does not encrypt the data.

So I would be looking for a utility that encrypts and decrypts a file based on a given user name and password, where the user name and password would be used to generate the key.

You should look into using StompSoft's Digital Vault. This software will allow you to encrypt, hide and password protect an unlimited number of files and folders, as well as allow for the creation of encrypted 'vaults' on a portable drive.

Install TrueCrypt. Its free and its FBI-quality encryption. Just make sure your password is strong.

It will create a file on your PC and, when open, it will be mapped to a drive letter.

You can even use "key files" to make sure that it's even more secure. Without these files, you can't open the encrypted file.

True Crypts good. It is unquire due to the hidden partition feature. Another free encryption utility is Gnu Privacy Guard. If you have GPG I suggest you get a GUI front end (eg WinPT). Enginmail is a gpg utility for Mozilla Thunderbird.
