A homogenous substance is one that is of the same composition throughout (for example a lump of gold is all Au atoms) whereas a heterogenous substance is varied in composition (for example milk is made up of water and fats and milk sugars all kind of mixed together), heterogenous substances can sometimes have the individual parts separate out from eachother.

these words are antonyms--they mean the opposite. Homogeneous means that everything in a group is the same--a forest comprised of all (and nothing but) white oak trees would be homogeneous. Heterogeneous means mixed and different--a forest comprised of Oaks, Maples, Birches and Conifers would be heterogeneous. Homo means "same", "Hetero" means mixed or different. Thus a homosexual has a sexual interest in the same sex and a heterosexual has an interest in a different sex.

In chemistry Homogeneous means that a system consists of a single phase which in turn means that the systems looks the same through every part of it (example: solution of salt in water)

Heterogeneous means that a system consists of two or more distinguishable phases, which in turn means that we can see different components through it (example, a soap foam in which we can distinguish the thin layers of bubbles and the air inside as separate components of the system)

Good luck!
