Body language.
My boss's secretary can be so cold when she's working that you could freeze-dry a fairly large steer just by leaving it near her.
But she never comes across as rude.
She just uses subtle little eye and body movements to proclaim that your close proximity is about as welcome as a case of full-body haemorroids.

Well, you may find the small talk boring, but small talk is the social currency of the office environment, that will get you on in your career!-Trust me. You may feel like its tens minutes of pointless chit-chat with some no mark, who obviously has diarylea for brains, but they obviously find you interesting or they wouldn't be talking to you, so take that as a compliment first. Secondly, if they like you, they are more likely to say nice things about you, when your name comes up for something important say...promotions. I'm afraid the pricey we pay, having to work with people we are obviously far superior too! Try some visualisation techniques while they are prattling on, take yourself off to somewhere else you would much rather be and tell yourself it will all be over soon....

Hmmmm. Hard call not knowing all the details, but one technique is the cell phone cover. If you walk past any group of people with a cell phone up to your ear (even if it is turned off) they will not engage you. Your other option is the fast walk with the busy look, but I am sure you are using that. Last resort, just say that you are so sorry but you have got to make a call asap and can't stop to talk.

Listen for a minute or so. Then look at your watch and (very sorrowfully mind you) - put a hand on their arm or shoulder - and say 'Oh, I'm so sorry. I'd really love to stay and chat but I'm afraid I have to make a call, take a call, I'm scheduled to meet with so & so...
They don't necessarily have to believe you, but it's a nice way to blow people off without appearing rude.

Why wouldn't you want to talk to these people?
You could make yourself look busy, rummage through some papers or when you see someone you think may talk to you turn & walk the other way, eventually they will get the message but be prepared to be known as the ignorant one in the office!

Why cant you talk to them?? A 5 min chat to get to know your co-workers makes the working enviroment a nicer place to be. Or if you really dont wanna talk to them be rude and then they wont bother with you anymore.

Just politely but firmly let them know you are up to your ears in business.
"I'm sorry, I don't want to cut you short, but I've got a deadline on this and I need to get on it right now."
On the other hand - you seem fairly antisocial and really uninterested in them or their lives - why do you care if you offend them? Just flat out tell them "I'm here to work, not to chat"

I understand how you feel, it's annoying and intrusive and keeps you from your work. There really is no easy way, just stand up and excuse yourself and walk away. I'm sure after awhile most folks in your office will get it, that you aren't part of the team. Happy life at work!

Simply inturupt them and say " Im very sorry, but I really must be going. Maybe another time? "
Or something along those lines.. But hey, small talk is great and it doesnt hurt. If your in no hurry, try listening sometimes. It could actully be good.
