The modern concept of education is three-dimensional. John Dewy advocated education as a tri-polar process. Education is imparted in the society. The whole environment of the individual becomes the source of the setting. The teacher consciously designs and plans the experiences of the child in the light of the social environment. Education has to cater to the needs of the individual as well as society. The child has to participate in the social activities and direct his instinct urges and tendencies to the society. Thus education includes the new dimension that is the social environment. The process of education includes three things – the teacher, the taught, and the social environment. All education proceeds by the participation of the individual in the social consciousness of the race. A society provides direction and goals to the educational activities. In return it expects us to contribute to its progressive development. Thus the teacher, the taught and the society form the main poles in the tripolar process of education.
