Hall effect devices are usually small (1-2mm) squares of semiconductor. They are used for detecting magnetic fields. Some times for measurement of the field strength some times as switches. There are usually several hall devices in the motors of disk drives used to comutate(turn the motor field windings on and off at the right times) the motor. wikipedia has a nice entry on the Hall effect.
