To get people to your blog for the first time:
* Include the link to your blog with your e-mail/forum signatures, on your webpage etc.
* Comment on other people's blog and include link to your blog as signature
* Link to other blogs (they'll start linking to yours)
* Submit your blog to Blogarama, Globe of Blogs, BlogWise, Blog Catalog, Blog Search Engine, Blog Hub, Blog Rankings, BlogStreet Profile, Technorati (find these using a seach engine)
To make sure that people who visit your blog will visit again:
* Make your posts easy to read.
* Focus on a subject area that you are expert at. Write something interesting, controversial, funny... you get it.
* Use provocative titles for blog entries ("One country that's responsible for all the chaos in the world", "10 reasons God doesn't exist"...)

Google will archive websites at times, so it could be that someone ran a search on a word that you used somewhere in your blog. But no, people can find your site without you telling them. This IS the internet, after all. But if you'd like to increase traffic to your site, I'd suggest sending out emails to your friends.
