It depends on the purpose on which the asker asked the question.
If some one is asking the question for fun he will select the answer which is funny .If someone needs the information for submitting home work he will see which answer explains the concept correctly. Many people dont mention at what proficency level they are.If someone answers the question thinking the other person is expert ,usually goes above the askers head. The asker may not judge the answer correctly.

For example for this question if you are expecting answers to say people are idiots,*** ***** you will not select this as a Best answer. If you want good reason, logic then chances is 50-50

It is frustrating to give a good answer, and then, someone who gave a dumb one gets Best Answer. The results are determined by the asker or voters, and they may not know what is really best. Scholars do not judge. On the other hand, I see some people who do know what should be best.

Quite often i find that people take things far far to seriously and i find the silly answers to be refreshing. It is nice to have my questions answered with some imagination, life and thought.
The answer i mark as 'best answer may not be the most informative, and may not contain the information i eventually use, but it does not necassarily make it 'best.
Don't forget that 'best' is a subjective term anyway and can not always be measured quantitatively as you seem to wish. The best performer in a show may not be the one with the flawless dance or the note perfect song. but the one who tried hardes, and realy made us watch.

Any best answer I get, I freely enjoy it as a surprise bonus, since there seems to be no consistency whatsoever.

Possibly, like love, something just clicks between the answer and the questioner for him to choose it as the best.

Not only different questioners are looking for different things, the same questioner too is unlikely to be consistent in what he/she is looking for from different questions.

This is why the human mind is simply amazing, can not just be coded.

lol

I once spent 30 mins typing out and logically walking through a philosophical question.

The chosen answer did not provide anything other than it was what the asker wanted to hear - it was also only 5 words long.

Oh well... that's life for ya eh?

The same reason why stupid people get voted into office.

Human intelligence is over-rated, especially when pooled.

apparently, the best answer didn't sound stupid for the person who asked the question.

i've been cheated a lot of times as well. but what can we do?

When it comes to voting, people are driven by force of habit perhaps !
Look at the politicians who get elected so easily !

maybe the person who asked the question is stupid or the best answer didn't sound stupid for the person who asked the question.
