I run cross country and we had a race yesturday. I didn't finish and I feel awful. What can I do to make myself feel better about this. There are some factors to this like I couldn't breath because I'm getting over a cold. What I did was I stopped about 300 yds to the finish line. I now its because I just couldn't breath but what can I do to make it alright with myself?

Not every run is meant to be a great run. When we keep showing up it seperates the winners from the average. Its not the finish that determines your worth, you win just for showing up.

You can remind yourself you really are competeing against just you. Coache would always say the more you run the better you will become. Make sure you stretch well all of your body your neck to your ankles, this will help you warm up your muscles a bit. I know the feeling because I came short in a cross country race myself and ended up walking part of the time and actually fell in the race.

The fact that you did not finish is not what you should look at.My old coach always told us if we did not win or finish well or dropped out we were still the winners because we did get out there and race, where the people watching did not.So in reality you could drop out of the race, but you could say you beat the captain of the football team if he was not in the race.

I had the same thing happen to me. I know it sucks to not finish. But what I did was I said to myself "so what" After all its only one race and you still have the rest of the season to improve. You ran till you couldnt anymore. Now thats pushing yourself. It will be alright because as long as you were out there running your butt off then you still have something to be proud of. Just remember to pace yourself next time and you'll be fine.

Keep training at 100% effort. It wasn't your day. Don't worry about why you came up short, but focus on the next race. Prove it was an anomaly.

The idea behind competition is to do your best. If you did the best you could under the circumstances then you were a winner. Other people in your situation probably wouldn't even have tried.
