He knew what he was doing and to say he's gay, how is that justifing his actions. If his plan is to say he's gay and link pedophilia with homosexuality, then he's living in a delusional world. The alcoholism thing, seems that's the escape of everyone that gets into a tight spot. Mel Gibson went to rehab after he got hammered by his anit-sematic comments. Anytime a celeb or politician gets into a bind he goes to rehab. Rehab is not going to excuse the persons actions. Though he resigned, at this point to try and find an excuse to link between what he did is unacceptable, he should just accept that he will be investigated and if found guilty, he will face the Law.

I believe it's the fact that he publicly announced he is gay
IN ADDITION TO THE "FACT: that he was molested by a religious officer when he was 13 until he was 15. Oh yeah, and the booze are also to blame. Those three little blurbs and the Dow Jones being up a few notches were all he needed to be exempt from the behaviors which are so obviously inappropriate. The lack of accountability within the current administration is like a Get Out of Jail Free card in Monopoly. Disappointing, isn't it?

I don't think being gay was being used as a justification. However, I do think his claims of alcoholism and being molested as a teen were provided to help justify his actions. The molestation claim, if true, would no doubt be a contributing factor to his actions, but ultimately he needs to step up and take full responsibility.

Republicans always claim to be able individuals taking responsibility...until it comes time to pay the piper. Just look at the way the Republican leadership is scurrying around like rats jumping off a sinking ship. Every pointing the fingers at everyone else. Personal responsibility, my ***.

It doesn't.

Being gay has nothing to do with being a pedophile. Most gay people are not child molesters. In fact, most pedophiles are actually heterosexual. But, of course, it's convenient to blame gays for all the world's evils.

His other excuse, that had been molested by a clergy member as a teenager, is just as ludicrous. I would think that someone who had been molested would understand the kinds of emotional damage that it can do, and would want to save others from the same kind of suffering, not cause more of it. Foley's lawyer seems to imply that Foley's own experience at being molested turned him into a molester. By that logic, if someone is a rape victim, I suppose she or he would be more likely to go out and rape another person. I don't think so.

I find his actions disgusting though I am not sure of the legal implications as the age of consent in D.C. is 16. I have to agree with you about these people who get caught in compromising situations. I am so tired of all this victim mentality that offenders AND the media place these people in.

ABC has admitted that the IM posts were from an 18 year old page. Inappropriate? Sure. Pedophilia? No. Guess what straight guys like 17/18 year old girls too, and like homosexuals they control themselves or laugh it off 99% of the time.

As far as I'm concerned you can't even justify being gay, so it doesn't.
