Your medication (if SSRI) needs at least a week to take effect. If you're beyond the first two weeks, I'd suggest talking to your GP about changing to an alternative, as it sounds like the current prescription isn't working.

Squeezing your ear lobes slows the heartbeat (weird but true), but you should probably lie down and relax until the attack subsides. Don't worry, you won't die from an anxiety attack, despite your mind running away with itself and telling you so.

I am glad you are getting support for your feelings with therapy and medication. It sounds like you could use some help with this. Finding a release from anxiety can take some time. Be patient. Talk with your doctors. And as a simple self-help, please look in your community for places that can help you learn and practice meditation. I have been doing it for a long time now and it has done wonders for me. You have to stick with it. At first, it feels hard to sit still and just relax. But that is what meditation is all about and if you will follow its simple steps, you will find a great reward of peace. This can be done what ever your religious values may be. So do some homework. Find a center or class that sounds good to you and give it a try. And remember, we can lessen our anxiety by just breathing slowly. Focus on that and you will feel calmer.

Hate to be a jerk but the answers I've read that you've received really don't have a clue. I've experienced what you have. First of all, go see a doctor, like tomorrow, if you can. If you feel worse, as in sharp pain, go to an emergency room immediately. Chew an aspirin and have someone drive you. I would ask this now, however -- are you under tremendous stress right now? Not a little, but a lot? If so, your anxiety might be bringing on these symptoms. If it's not that, it could be heart related. Yet, remember this -- there are a lot of heart conditions, all of them should be taken seriously, but not all of them are deathly dangerous. Just go get checked out, at a family doctor first. Protect yourself. Wish you the best. Mike

Because most of us are on the fast track and we don't take care of ourselves. I too take medication for that and never much paid attention to symptoms of sweating, fast heartbeat, etc. Three mos. ago I had a mild heart attack at 45 years old (Day after my birthday) Listen to those symptoms. If the medication doesn't help then go back to the doctor and try something else. Those signs are as warning telling you that something is wrong. It may be something simple to fix, but fix it.

I've had a few anxiety attacks in my day, but I also have heart arrhythmia. (ie racing heart, stomach upset, cramping, short of breath, faintness, etc.) I would watch it, because I didn't know what was wrong with me for the longest time and let it go...then I had an angina attack...which could eventually destroy your heart if you have too many of them. I would check with your doctor. It could be that your medication isn't working, or that there is more to your condition than you're aware of...

Read "Panic Attacks Self Help for your Nerves" by Dr. Claire Weekes. If need be See a Psychologist. Medication is not the answer.

Try keeping a diary / log for a few days - make a note of what you are eating, drinking, what sleep you are getting, what stress you are under etc.

You might spot some triggers - for instance, caffeine and alcohol (the day after) can trigger anxiety feelings.

Have you spoken to your GP - CBT counselling can help.

Try breathing slowly, getting a relaxation tape etc. It will help you control the attacks when they happen.

I used to feel the same way, anxiety attacks, panic attacks. I think that the medication you are taking may be not strong enough. See your doctor and tell him what you are still having, he will probably up your medication.

You don't need medication for anxiety unless you are Borderline Psychotic.

Go and see a competent Clinical Psychologist who will show you how to recognise the symptoms of the onset of an attack and will teach you relaxing and breathing exercises to ward it off.

End of anxiety attack - racing pulse, nausia, dizziness- it just takes a little knowhow and a little practice
