i am 18 years and i have a crush on this smart guy, ihave afeeling that he exchanges the same feelings with me. the problem is that he is so shy to take a step, what should i do? (he is my coleag in university)

talk, talk & talk being shy will not help if he is very shy then you have to take the step forward and ask him , there is nothing wrong in asking be bold. Best of luck

If I where you i'd take the initiative and ask him out. Ask him out for coffee and a warm conversation, and some study sessions or something. If he is too shy, than i'd take the first step and ask him out. I'd say to him," So would you like to go out for some coffee and just talk sometime, kind of get to know each other better?" and if he says yes sure, than you could say would this Friday or what ever day you want, would that work out for you? So if he won't ask you out, than you go ahead and ask him out.

Just go and talk to him and keep a conversation with him for sometime so that he gets used to you and then he won't be shy and he might make the first move

if you are also the shy type, then take an oppotunity to sit at the same lunch table and chat casually.
Casually chat a few times and maybe say you have some books on his interests and you can loan them to him if he can drop over at your place to collect them.

first get to know the guy first before you develop any feeling for him, sum appear very sweet in the beginning and after a while their trough colours comes out, then you the one with the broken heart
