Goldfish are quite intelligent and will recognize the person who feeds them. They will show they know you by swimming rapidly back and forth when you are near the tank or splashing.

If you don't put a lid on top of the bowl a goldfish it will eventually jump out to enlarge the environment it is living in.

The research, led by Phil Gee of Plymouth University, has added a sophisticated body clock to the piscine intellect. In his experiment, goldfish were placed in a bowl in which they were fed only when they pressed a lever. The fish rapidly learnt that pressing the lever produced a food reward.

Once they had been trained in this way, the researchers set up the lever to work for just one hour a day. The fish soon became wise to this, and learnt to press the lever at the same time every day to feed. “The fish worked out that if they hit the lever around that time, they would get some food,” Dr Gee said. “Their activity around the lever increased enormously just before the set hour when their food was dispensed.

Goldfish and the 3 second memory span:
The Myth Busters TV show proved this one a myth. They taught fish to swim through a maze, showing that their time got faster and faster. Thus proving they remembered where the holes were.

They swim away when they see us so they must be intelligent!

I remember I had a goldfish once in a classic circle bowl. It got spooked by me coming near it, swam round the bowl in circle so fast that it flipped itself out and onto the carpet!!! I picked it up quickly and put it back. I was petrified at the time.....

Not sure how 'intelligent' they are (or how you would quantity that), but it seems they myth about them having a 3 second memory is in fact just a myth.

Myth Busters (TV show) taught one to repeatedly navigate a maze, and its time got better and better. Therefore, an indication that it was 'learning'.

Fish are intelligent. Fish migrate from the ocean to small streams in suburban neighborhoods every year; that is amazing. I can't do that! I have kept pet bettas who recognize me and show emotions like love and compassion, sadness, grief, etc.; and that proves that fish have feelings. When one dies the others notice and some show signs of grieving or least awareness of loss. I love my marine pets.
