The first punk single to be released in the UK on an indie label was New Rose by the Damned. The Sex Pistols Anarchy was released at the same time on Emi records. No-one can seem to agree on this one. If it's purely from a date point of view, it's Personality Crisis by New York Dolls. That's from around 1974.

From what I remember of the era, and from what I've read on various historical music sites, Australian band The Saints released their first single "I'm Stranded" before either the Sex Pistols or the Damned. Don't know whether it's true, just letting you know what I've read.

The term was first used in a 1971 magazine. So it's only logical to refer to the band that was described in that same article - ? and the mysterians. Their first single is 96 Tears from 1966.
