Giving up nicotine is not easy. Smokers have a physiological addiction to nicotine and their behaviour has been conditioned to follow a routine that reinforces the habit. Most smokers know that smoking is bad for them, even potentially lethal, yet they continue to smoke. Before you can begin to quit smoking you need the will power and conviction to say that you don't want to smoke anymore. If you are a heavy smoker then it stands to reason that you are going to find it harder to quit smoking than someone who only smokes a few cigarettes a day.

My advice is this, you need an introspective analysis of yourself. Try to wind your mind back on how you came to smoking and the circumstances that you have gone through that now forcing you to seek advice. After this thnk of things, that you would be doing if you were not smoking and priotise them with benefits. Develop an action plan with the help of a specialists or a friend, ideally this will start the process but at the end of the day it will be you to decide. I believe there is No universal procedure for this but change in your behaviour and you need to think possitively.

Seems like you are half way there, but the other half is not helping you, tell him not to leave fags in the home and not to smoke in the house. Also seems he is the weakest link for stopping. Show him you can do it, no matter what he will do. Smoking really is the pits, health wise and economy wise, you pay a lot of cash to make yourself unhealthy at best, early painfull death at worst. Take it from an ex smoker and stop for good.

I just QUIT after 38 yrs. of smoking 6 months ago ! I never thought I could do it either . Here is the trick ... You must really want to quit more than you want to smoke , then nothing will stop you . I did use the nicotine gum for about 3 months . My Mom smokes in the car with me when I take her shopping once a week . It doesn't make me want one , the smoke actually bothers me . I was a die hard smoker too up to 2 1/2 pks. a day .
All of my Friends still smoke and none of it effects me . It is strange to me to breath clean air after a life time of smoking but it is GREAT ! So if you really want to you can too !

Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

Try to get your other half to stop with you and have a bet on who can stop the longest with the loser paying for a slap-up meal with Champagne and all the extras. If after 4 weeks you have both still stopped then use the money you saved from not buying fags to pay for the meal. Or get rid of other half..

You are very lucky that you don't get cravings, it sounds to me like you need the support of your other half! If you both make a pact to stop, then he gives in, tell him to leave his smokes at the office or somewhere you cannot see, touch or smell them.

You need to support eachother in this, stick with it, you can do it. Both of you!

I do that too....but to be honest I find it very hard to stop at all. Maybe go see your doctor and get some patches or try hypnotherary?

Be like me, I'm a Killer Whale. It's almost impossible to light my cigarettes - it's always wet and i've got no matches.
