Artificial Intelligence is still in early stages of developement.

Here's the problem:

There was a young fellow called Lee
invented a water proof PC
but then when he tried it
the bath water fried it,
and instead of AI it was AIIEEE!!!

The only difference was that computers in 2001 didn't have the voice recognition and voice synth features. Computers in the 70's could navigate a spaceship to Jupiter (just like HAL) and beyond. Just look at Pioneer and Voyager.

Computers aren't stupid, they only do what humans program them to.

Since the efforts of Charles Babbage the capabilities of computers have increased at an amazing rate, when you consider that only 20 years ago a typical home computer had only 32K of memory!

If you want to compare computers with that of the sci fi film, consider this: By the 23rd century, our computers will be far more advanced that depicted in the modern Star Trek films, and already greatly surpass those portrayed in the original Star Trek series.

even compared with the "stupid" computers of 2001, could you do the mathematical computations they did in seconds, even using a calculator? probably not. next time ask a more sensible question

What's smart about trying to eliminate your crew for the sake a of a mission that couldn't be done with a computer alone. The best film though.
