The most effective and kindest to the enviroment, though the hardest work is just to continously dig and pull them up the moment you see new growth have them out. It will take a few years though. You may want to keep some in a large bucket sunk in the ground so they dont spread as they can be very attractive almost evergreen and can look nice cut in a vase for greenery

About 5 years of constantly digging manure into the ground.
Weedkillers are no good as the weed doesnt have the leaves to soak it up.

Ammonium sulphamate
which is a spray weed killer
you need to keep racking the area its a bad one to have .
new shoots go under ground for metres upon metres
if you really want to get rid of all of it
dig the lot up

Pull it, hang it upside down to dry, crush it and put it into baggies for a tea that will make you a hero to all your friends who have problems with their joints, especially knees.

(The minute the weed knows it is useful, it may disappear out of your garden. grin )

the only way is to keep digging it up.you have to get all the roots out or they will just keep growing back
