A guy cuts off one of his hands and puts it in a box. He looks at it, smiles and hands it over to the second guy. Guy #2 opens the box, looks at the hand, smiles, and hands it over to guy #3. Guy #3 opens the box, looks at the hand, smiles and buries the box with the hand in it. Why?

I've seen it before and I know it has something to do with all being survivors of a horrible tragedy that made someone's hand get cut off to save their lives but i can't think how it goes exactly. I always thought it was a really dumb and overly contrived riddle.
