'it was so nice to meet you'...do you ever get the feeling that what they really mean is 'thank god i've managed to get rid of you, and i'll be glad if i never see you again in my life'?

Ahahahaha. . Somehow I can relate to that because that's my courteous way of cutting the conversation short.. Its more acceptable than evading or pretending not to see anyone.

As long as a person's presence is acknowledged, I dont see any problem with that. . . and neither should anyone be bothered by it.

Yes sure but still I would prefer them to say It was nice to meet you rather than : Go away.
