Yes, you definitely need a tourist visa. Although Thailand would give you one on arrival, the airline will not let you board the plane without a visa. I nearly got caught out on that one last time I went home to UK.
The tourist visa will give you sixty days, and can be extended for another 30.

Good luck - it's a great place.

You DO NOT need any kind of visa prior to your arrival in Thailand. Upon arrival, and with at least six months remaining on your passport, you will be given a stamp that allows you to stay for either 15 or 30 days. What you must remember is you will need to pay 500 baht per person when you leave (a passenger service charge) that is not included in the price of your ticket. A lot of people forget that. Don't worry though, it's only about seven quid. If you intend staying longer or are arriving on a one-way ticket they you will probably need some kind of visa prior to your arrival, and these can be obtained from any of the Thai consulates in the UK (London, Cardiff, Hull). I am not sure of the cost but it should be less than 50 quid.

You get 30 days on arrival with a britsh passport, if you are traveling for a while just pop across the border into malaysia or mynamar (depending where you are at he time) to get another 30 days visa. You can do this as often as you want...we did for a year.

If you have a British passport you do not need a visa for a stay of up to 30 days, provided you have an onward or return ticket.
